Wolf Spider, carrying young

A wolf spider (Family Lycosidae) carrying freshly hatched spiderlings on her abdomen.
The family Lycosidae encompasses 102 genera and over 2300 species. Most of them are active hunters, for which they rely on their excellent eyesight. Wolf spiders are easily identifiable by their eye pattern. The two middle eyes are very dominant and are placed over a row of four smaller eyes.
Wolf spiders engage in parental care. They carry their egg sacs with them until the young are ready to hatch, at which point the mother opens the sac with her fangs. The young then climb up to the mothers abdomen and continue to be carried by her until their first molt.
